WIRED & WIRELESS: The Leaders and The Best

E-Mail at Michigan

The U-M e-mail service is remarkably reliable and robust. Michigan receives 40 million delivery attempts each week, with 30 million being blocked because they contain spam, viruses, or phishing scams, or are undeliverable for myriad reasons. Most of the 10 million e-mails passing through the institution's gateway are routed to various campus e-mail servers. About 30 terabytes of mail are stored in 92,000 central e-mail boxes (does not include the U-M Medical Campus).

E-mail is provided to all U-M students, who share the same e-mail services as faculty and staff—unlike students at many other schools. Shared benefits include virus and spam checking, online directory, message groups for staying connected with friends and fellow students, and message forwarding. Student mailboxes have no quota and are accessible via a web interface or a desktop client. Upon graduation, students can keep their "@umich.edu" e-mail address.
